The Buddha cautious us not to follow blindly, not do listen blindly,

In Anguttara Nikaya 111, 65(在增支部,111,六十五) The Kalama Sutta(卡拉摩经)

The Buddha said:(佛陀说)
Do not believe something just because it has been passed along and re-told for many generations.(不要依赖重复听来的話)

Do not believe something merely because it has become a traditional practice.( 不要依赖传统)

Do not believe something simply because it is well-know everywhere.

Do not believe something just because it is cited in a text.

Do not believe something solely on the grounds of logical reasoning.

Do not believe something merely because it accords with your philosophy.

Do not believe something  because it appeals to “common sense”.

Do not believe something just because you like the idea.

Do not believe something because the speaker seems trustworthy

Do not believe something thinking, “This is what out teacher says.”

World-renowned teacher can have wrong views
In the Anguttara Nikaya Sutta 5.88(就正如佛陀在,增支部第五点八八经). The Buddha said: “It possible that a world-renowned monk of very senior status with a huge following of lay and monastics, and who is highly learned in the scriptures, can have wrong views.” The Buddha gave this warning for the future(i.e. nowadays)as he saw and knew that even such monks could not be relied upon. Therefore, the sutta(and Vinaya for monastics) should be relied on and made our foremost teacher. Other teachers can be spiritual friends only.(有时一名举世闻名的僧人,年资很高,拥有众多的在家和出家第子,而且对经教有很高深的学问,但他也有可能拥有邪见。

Even the sutras should be examined and not blindly followed. We must be able to discern the right from the wrong by comparing the teachings with the basic universal truths and the precepts. If the teachings in question clearly contradict these, we should reject them.  If the teachings in question seem to contradict these, then we should not accept nor reject them first. In simple words, we should KIV it. We should accept those teachings only to the extent what we can verify and believe.
