原始的佛教是沒有塑像的。

大乘興起之后有了佛像，
原本“如來佛祖” 就是 “釋迦牟尼”，沒有分別。
倒是對于 “釋迦牟尼” 的形象描繪，隨著各地文化的不同而有不同。
南傳佛教的“釋迦牟尼佛”造型（泰國的就是）和中亞、漢地的都不同，
但不須在意其間的差異，因為他們的意義是很接近的。大致上是：
以莊嚴神情象征佛的慈悲智慧，
以姿勢手印象征佛的意向行至，
讓禪修者觀想作意，讓世俗大眾會心禮拜。

到了大乘“法身佛”觀念發展之后，
當人們說“如來佛祖”時，往往有指涉“法身佛”的傾向。

在佛殿上作為主尊的，通常是所謂的“如來佛”，也就是“釋迦牟尼佛”的法身，
但有些道場是以其他十方佛、大菩薩為主尊的，
密教道場所禮敬的主尊，除了根本佛、五方五佛，也可能是各種本尊、空行、護法。

Ru lai fo zu is one of the ten 称号 of buddha. In the opening of the eighty eight buddha 忏悔文 there is this sentence; 南无，如来，应供，正遍知，明行足，善逝世间解，无上士，调御丈夫，　天人师，佛，世尊。In pali is Namo tassa bhagavato arahato samma sambudhassa.
