image “ Singapore has the advantage of having a bilingual education system. Our Buddhist College is established in Singapore, to cater to the needs of the Buddhist community by training our students to be bilingual and of service to the world, thereby advancing the promulgation of Chinese Buddhism in the world.” - Ven. Kwang Sheng

Venerable Kwang Sheng graduated from the renowned Victoria Secondary School. A devout Buddhist, he was ordained by the well-respected Venerable Hong Choon in 1980, after which, he spent many years studying and practicing in different countries such as Taiwan, Myanmar, Thailand, Japan and Korea. He spent a total of 3 years in Songgwangsa, Korea practicing Zen meditation. In 1995, Venerable Kwang Sheng became the Superintendent of Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery. During his tenure, he generously sponsored many Sangha members for overseas studies. Ven Kwang Sheng was appointed the sixth Abbot of the Monastery in 2004. Presently he is the President of the Singapore Buddhist Federation as well as the Singapore Buddhist Free Clinic.
Concerned with the shortage of learned Buddhist monastics, Venerable Kwang Sheng made preparations to establish a Buddhist College in 2005 while residing at Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery. Since the inception of BCS, Venerable Kwang Sheng, as the Rector, has worked tirelessly, meticulously overseeing both internal and external affairs as well as showing care and concern for the students. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration on 1 May 2011 by one of BCS’ affiliated Universities – Thailand’s Mahachulalongkornlajavidyalaya University – in recognition of his outstanding contributions towards Buddhism.

Venerable Kwang Sheng is also an avid Buddhist musician and has co-produced several bestselling albums such as “Reverence”, “Buddha Smiles”, “Collection of Buddhist Songs” and “Om Mani Padme Hum”.

Our Mission

Our mission is to specialize in Chinese Buddhism, respect other lineages and promote inter-religious harmony. This is achieved through conducting a brief study of the various Buddhist schools.
Below is our motto:

Mind abiding in ultimate virtue
Acting according to precepts
Understanding and practicing
Benefiting all sentient beings

Our graduates will be proficient in English and Chinese languages and possess extensive knowledge of the Dharma. They will also be cultured, established in virtue as well as be of benefit to all sentient beings.

Future Development

The College will invest more than S$30 million to build an integrated campus, which is estimated to house hundreds of resident lecturers and students…

In anticipation of the local and overseas Sangha’s demand for professional talents, the college will progressively establish and run a research institute in the near future, providing a multi-discipline research centre for outstanding undergraduates from within and overseas institutions for further studies, grooming future Buddhist leaders and scholastics for the Sangha community. Furthermore, the College also hopes to foster healthy cooperative partnerships with other tertiary Buddhist education and research organizations through the signing of memorandum of understanding (MOU). Through this initiative, the college hopes to negotiate for the awarding of bachelor’s degree for our graduates, to jointly conduct the research projects or to actualize plans for student exchange programmes. In addition, the college will gradually compile its own academic journals and establish a publishing house for Buddhist academic works.
Apart from the ongoing process of boosting the solid faculty, the Buddhist College of Singapore is constructing a new teaching block on the site of the sanctuary in Kong Meng San Phor Kark See. Occupying a land area of 10,272 sqm, it will be a multi-purpose building housing teaching, research, office, sports, hostel and other facilities.

A brand new building will rise from the ground in the near future, to groom more Buddhist talents.
