      <description>English Talk by Dr. Thomas Borchert
On 19 April (Wednesday) afternoon 2:00pm, Dr. Thomas Borchert was invited by Buddhist College of Singapore (BCS) to give an English talk on “Chinese Buddhists or Buddhists in China: The Case of the Theravada Buddhists of Yunnan Province”. Lecturers and students from BCS attended the talk.


Dr. Thomas Borchert is an assistant professor of religious studies at the University of Vermont, specializing in Theravada Buddhism. He has conducted research on Buddhist Education in Xishuangbanna and religion and politics in Thailand. Currently, Dr. Borchert is a visiting research fellow at the Nalanda&#45;Sriwijaya Centre at ISEAS.


During the talk, Dr. Borchert looked into the practice of Theravada Buddhism in Yunnan Province and whether the people are understood as &#8220;Buddhists in China&#8221; or &#8220;Chinese Buddhists&#8221;. There were points made on national, ethnic and religious identity. The topic was interesting and questions were raised towards the end of the talk.</description>

 5月12日，北京大学东方学研究院院长兼印度研究中心主任王邦维教授前来新加坡佛学院参访，佛学院副院长兼教务长长清法师在宏船老和尚纪念馆接待了王教授，并陪同王教授参观了佛学院校舍及针对佛学教育与教学研究进行了交流意见。

 

Professor Wang Bangwei visited Buddhist College of Singapore on 12 May 2010. Professor Wang is the Director of Institute of Oriental Studies and Director of Centre for Indian Studies, Peking University. He was received by Deputy Rector / Dean of Academic Ven. Dr. Chang Qing at Venerable Hong Choon Memorial Hall. They toured the college premises and exchanged views on Buddhist education and educational research.</description>

      <description>“法门寺舍利之谜：唐代国王及其对佛指舍利的供奉”英文学术讲座.


4月21日（星期三）下午两点，本院在藏经楼举办了一场以“法门寺舍利之谜：唐代国王及其对佛指舍利的供奉”为主题的英文学术讲座。演讲者是沈丹森博士。我院师生共同参加了这讲座。


沈丹森博士是在纽约市立大学巴鲁克学院亚洲历史和宗教副教授。目前，他是那烂陀室利佛逝中心，新加坡东南亚研究所的访问高级研究员。他对佛教、中印双边关系、印度洋贸易及丝绸之路考古有特殊的学者兴趣。


沈丹森博士在讲座中谈到了几个要点，比如中国早期佛教、形像和其他文物的重要性、佛教舍利扮演的角色和舍利供奉在中国的演变，才进入探讨“法门寺舍利之谜” 的主题。 由于这个主题有趣，所以在问答时段听众发问了许多问题。讲座在兴高采烈的气氛下结束。





On 21 April (Wednesday), Dr. Tansen was invited by Buddhist College of Singapore (BCS) to give an English talk on “The Mystery of Famen Monastery Relic: Tang Rulers and the Veneration of the Buddha’s Finger Bone”. Lecturers and students from BCS attended the talk.

Dr. Tansen, is an Associate Professor of Asian History and religions at Baruch College, The City University of New York. He is currently a visiting senior research fellow at the Nalanda&#45;Sriwijaya Centre, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Singapore. He has special scholarly interests in Buddhism, Sino&#45;Indian relations, Indian Ocean trade and Silk Road archeology. 

During the talk, Dr. Tansen touched on several main points such as Early Buddhism in China, Importance of Image and other Artifacts, Role of Buddhist Relics as well as the Evolution of Relic Veneration in China before going on to the Mystery of the Famen Relic. The topic about the Mystery of the Famen Relic was interesting and many questions were raised during the question and answer session. The talk ended on a lively note.</description>

During the ceremony, the Rector, Venerable Sik Kwang Sheng, reminded students to take good care of their health, observe self&#45;discipline and to have a heart of gratitude as their basis for learning for the new semester.</description>

2009年12月15日，中国国家宗教事务局局长王作安先生带领代表团前来光明山普觉禅寺参访，方丈广声大和尚在聚缘坊热情地接待了代表团一行人。之后，王作安局长在藏经楼看望了新加坡佛学院学生。会上王作安局长与广声大和尚都发表了以继续加强中新两国佛教界友好交流与勉励学僧精进学习为主题的热情演讲，会后双方互赠了礼品并拍摄团体照以作纪念。</description>

      <description>“印度教之‘法’”为主题的英文学术讲座



12月2日（星期三）下午两点，本院在藏经楼举办了一场以“印度教之‘法”为主题的英文学术讲座。演讲者是江彩花博士，并由学院顾问传诚法师担任中文翻译。我院师生约一百人参加了这场讲座。


江彩花博士，新加坡人，毕业于英国伦敦大学亚非学院，修读学位期间，致力于印度宗教比较学的研究。最近，她在新加坡国立大学完成了她的博士后特别研究生。

	

江博士从四个方面对印度教之“法”进行了阐释：

一、吠陀时期“法”的意义；

二、吠陀时期之后“法”的意义的变迁。

三、“法”对社会改革的影响。

四、“法”对现代所面临的挑战。

通过江博士两个小时的精彩演讲，让我们对印度教之“法”的概念及变迁过程有了进一步的了解和认识，这对今后我们在印度佛教研究领域提供了丰富宝贵的参考资料。


On 2 December (Wednesday), Dr. Fah Kong was invited by Buddhist College of Singapore (BCS) to give an English talk on Hindu Dharma. Translation in Mandarin was provided by Ven. Dr. Chuan Cheng, our College Advisor. About a hundred teachers and students from BCS attended the talk.


Dr Fah Kong, a Singaporean, graduated from School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. During her studies, she specialized in Indian religions and comparative religion. She has recently completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the National University of Singapore (NUS).


Dr. Fah Kong presented the talk from 4 aspects, namely, “Meaning of Dharma in the Vedic literature”, “Meaning of Dharma in the Post&#45;Vedic literature”, “Dharma: Time and Social Reforms” and “Challenges faced in modern times”. Through her interesting presentation which lasted 2 hours, we were able to deepen our knowledge and understanding of Hindu Dharma. This knowledge will prove an invaluable contribution for our future Buddhist research.</description>

2009年8月31日上午九时，新加坡佛学院全体师生在庄严祥和的气氛中，举行了新学期开学典礼。在典礼上，受邀前来参加典礼的泰国摩诃朱拉隆功大学校长Phra Dharmakosajarn和我院院长广声大和尚互赠礼品，并授权我院教授中文佛学学士课程。新加坡佛学院正式被泰国摩诃朱拉隆功大学理事会主席批准为摩诃朱拉隆功大学附属学院。


On 31 August 2009, 9.00am, Buddhist College of Singapore (BCS) held its school re&#45;opening ceremony. During the ceremony, the Rector of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Phra Dharmakosajarn and the Rector of BCS, Venerable Kwang Sheng, exchanged gifts and BCS was authorized to administer the Bachelor of Arts (Chinese Buddhism). BCS was formally approved by the President of University Council of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University to be Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University’s afflilated institute.</description>
